OpenAI is moving ChatGPT further into the advertising business. The company said on October 5 that it will begin testing a new visual ad format during image generation in ChatGPT later this month in the United States, initially with a limited group of advertisers. The ads will be labeled, displayed separately from the image a user is creating and, according to OpenAI, will not influence ChatGPT's answers.

The format itself is only half the story. In the same [announcement](https://openai.com/index/new-chatgpt-ads-format-and-measurement/?ref=nextwith.ai), OpenAI detailed a much larger measurement stack: conversion-data integrations, web and app attribution partners, geo-based incrementality experiments and brand-suitability pilots with established ad-verification companies. That makes this less like a one-off experiment with sponsored images and more like the construction of a full advertising platform around ChatGPT.

## What the new visual ad format changes

OpenAI says the initial format will appear while users generate images. The company describes the creative as imagery that can show product inspiration, product usage or experiences associated with a service. It is a logical surface for advertising because image-generation prompts often reveal commercial intent more clearly than a generic chat. A user designing a room, visualizing an outfit or exploring a product concept may be closer to a purchase decision than someone asking a broad informational question.

OpenAI says the advertisement will remain outside the generated image rather than being inserted into the user's creation. That separation matters. If paid content were blended directly into generated output, users could struggle to distinguish an advertiser's influence from the model's own response. The company's stated design keeps the paid unit visible as a separate object and preserves a clearer boundary between generated content and sponsorship.

[The Verge also reported](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1004655/openai-chatgpt-visual-ads?ref=nextwith.ai) that the U.S. test will start later in October and that OpenAI is positioning the format as an expansion of the advertising system it launched earlier this year. The practical question now is not whether ChatGPT can show an ad, but whether the company can make conversational advertising measurable enough for brands to treat it like a serious budget line.

## OpenAI is building the measurement plumbing advertisers expect

OpenAI says integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp will let advertisers send conversion data from existing systems into ChatGPT Ads. It also lists AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin among supported attribution partners, plus full-funnel measurement relationships with Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.

That list is important because a new ad surface becomes much more valuable once marketers can connect it to the same reporting and attribution systems they use elsewhere. A chief marketing officer is unlikely to shift meaningful budget based on click-through rates alone. The harder question is whether exposure inside ChatGPT causes incremental purchases, signups or app installs that would not have happened through search, social or direct traffic.

OpenAI says its work on incrementality is still early, but it is partnering with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic on geo-based experiments intended to estimate causal lift. The company also cites early partner-reported results from advertisers including WeightWatchers, Dose and Portland Leather. Those figures are useful signals, but they are not broad proof that ChatGPT Ads will outperform established channels across categories. They come from selected early campaigns and should be treated as vendor-presented case studies.

## Brand suitability is harder inside a conversation

Advertising next to a web page or video already requires careful controls. Advertising inside an AI conversation adds another layer because the surrounding context is dynamic and can become personal quickly. A conversation may shift from shopping advice to health, personal concerns or another sensitive subject within a few turns.

OpenAI says its placement guardrails assess whether a conversation is suitable for advertising and are designed to keep ads away from emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or otherwise inappropriate contexts. The company says it combines automated review, human oversight and ongoing monitoring, and it now offers qualifying advertisers a Negative Phrases feature for narrower placement restrictions.

OpenAI is also developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. The company says those partners will assess how its brand-safety standards are applied in a controlled environment without accessing private user conversations. That distinction will be central to the product's credibility: advertisers want independent verification, while users will expect their private chats not to become another dataset exposed to the advertising supply chain.

## The business model is becoming more legible

OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week. That figure is the company's own audience claim, but at that scale even modest advertising adoption could create a significant revenue stream alongside subscriptions and API usage. More importantly, advertising can subsidize free access and give OpenAI a way to monetize users who may never pay directly.

The strategic trade-off is trust. ChatGPT is useful partly because users treat it as an assistant rather than a search-results page. If ads feel intrusive, poorly labeled or too closely tied to sensitive conversation context, OpenAI risks weakening that relationship. If the company can keep paid placements clearly separated while using intent signals to make them genuinely relevant, conversational advertising could become a new category rather than a transplanted display-ad model.

The visual format is therefore a useful test of OpenAI's broader monetization thesis. The company is not merely adding more ad inventory; it is trying to establish the interfaces, measurement standards and safety controls that make ChatGPT legible to the advertising industry. The success of that effort will depend less on whether an image ad looks attractive and more on whether advertisers can prove incremental value without eroding user trust.

Advertisers should treat the rollout as an early inventory test, not a mature channel: validate incrementality against existing search and social spend, and watch how OpenAI handles placement transparency, user control and brand suitability as the format expands.
